Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera is the former president of the Republic of Uruguay. A lawyer by profession, Dr. Lacalle has been active in Uruguan politics since 1962. In 1987 he was named Vice-President of the Senate and on November 26th, 1989 he was elected President of Uruguay. In 1993 he was a guest speaker at the International Conference Against Racial Discrimination upon invitation of the World Jewish Congress. In 1994 he inaugurated the first Holocaust Museum in Latin America and on April 7th of that year he lead the March of the Living between Auschwitz and Birkenau. He was thus the first Head of State ever to participate in this commemoration of the Jewish people. Dr. Lacalle has written many essays and articles on political and economic issues affecting Latin America, has been a contributor to various news publications and active in radio journalism. In 1999 he published "My Brotherīs Keeper", a collection of articles on the subject of Israel and Judaism. Dr. Lacalle has received awards from many governments in Latin America, Europe and also the Jerusalem Prize (1995). He also holds honorary doctorates from four universities, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
